1. After installing my Toyota bug shield, I took my ride out for a test drive. At highway speeds, I noticed that it now makes crackling sound that seems to come from the top of the windshield. Has the bug shield something to do with it?

That noise can be caused by a loose trim running down the sides of your windshield. It’s only now that it becomes audible because the wind is being deflected upwards after the bug shield installation. The faster you drive, the stronger the wind that hits the loose trim, thus causing the crackling noise. This can be fixed by fastening the trim in place or putting a caulk in between the windshield and the trim to hold it in place.

2. I’m going to use solvent cement in fixing the cracks on my Toyota bug shield. Any tips on how I can make it really effective in putting together the two pieces of my shield that’s separated by the crack?

It is very important to make sure that your bug shield is free of oil or grease. So after taking the bug shield off the hood, take some time to wash it thoroughly with dish detergent that’s formulated to get rid of grease, making sure no oil is left on the surface. Then, allow the bug shield to dry completely before gluing the crack.

3. I will install my new Toyota bug shield a few days from now. Can you give me some preparation or pre-installation tips that could help make my DIY project faster and easier?

Before installing the bug shield, it is recommended that you do a trial fit first to ensure correct position and fit. This will help you avoid removal and reinstallation of the shield, which won’t help improve but will just degrade the tape’s adhesive performance. This way, if ever the part doesn’t fit well, you can easily return it to the seller and have it replaced. You see, solvent cements aren’t so friendly on the vehicle’s finish. So unless you want more damage not just on the shield but also on the hood paint, you should spend a few minutes taking the shield off your vehicle first before starting off with your DIY repair job.

7. How can I remove bugs and bug stains from my Toyota bug shield without damaging its finish?

You can use a gentle bug and tar remover; spray it directly on the bug or bug stain, allowing it to sit there for a while to loosen the debris that are stuck on the surface. Using a microfiber cloth, a 2-in-1 wash mitt, or a sponge, wipe away the bug remains/stain. Once the bug shield is completely clean, apply spray sealant, wax, or other products that can protect the paint on the affected surface.
