Detecting Worn Nissan Maxima Ball Joints

Worn Nissan Maxima ball joints aren't difficult to identify. There are a couple of inspection points you can check and tests you can do to verify if the ones on your car have gone bad. Some you can do while performing routine maintenance on your ride, while you may notice others at the times that you are having difficulty in handling the car. Whenever you encounter one of these symptoms, there's a big chance that it automatically points to something wrong with these suspension components. Replace and work on bad ball joints at once at the first sign of a problem.

Wheel shake

This is a simple test you can do to your Maxima to see if the ball joints are still in good condition or not. With the car raised on stands, try shaking the front wheels sideways. If you are able to move them with enough force and the joints appear to be shaking as well, this is a sure sign of bad ones on your car.

Unusual noise

A sign of playfulness in the ball joints is clunking noise from the area. You may hear this more while you are driving and the windows are down. The control arm and steering knuckle which is held together by the part is the reason behind this. Both component's internal parts have become loose that and end up rattling around the assembly.

Torn rubber boot

One portion of the Nissan Maxima's ball joint is encased in a rubber boot. This cover is where most of its oil is placed. When you see that the rubber is torn and ripped, it means that the internal parts are moving too much that it already punctures this sleeve. Not only will the joint be left without enough lubrication, it's also exposed to elements that can speed up its deterioration.

Bad steering

Any steering issues also point to bad ball joints. Turning the wheel may either be too stiff or too easy than it should be. Another symptom is when the car may also be veering towards one side when you let go of the steering wheel because of a bad alignment.

As one of the classic luxury cars from the Japanese make, the Nissan Maxima is one model that deserves your care and attention. With almost a feel as that of a sports car, it's vital that any part of its suspension system is kept in good condition for you to be able to handle it safely and effectively. For the car's ball joints, there are a couple of things you can do to prolong their life, limit problems, and delay the need for replacing these. Minor work and some adjustments are all it takes for you to be sure that the Maxima will handle like a dream.

Retuning

The other parts that are held together by the ball joints are the control arm and steering knuckle. In the Maxima's suspension system, the control arm is responsible for supporting the vertical movement of the car. The steering knuckle on the other hand takes care of translating your input on the steering wheel to turning the front wheels. If these are damaged in one way or another, the interconnectedness of these two parts can instantly ruin the performance of the ball joint. The result is a Maxima that feels as stiff as a rock and handles like it's being driven by a drunk driver.

Lubrication

It's highly recommended that you lubricate the ball joints every 3,000 miles of use. Do this also if you drive the car over deep puddles and flood because there's a chance that a good amount of oil has been washed away. If there isn't enough it, there's a lot of metal-to-metal contact that can induce premature wear on those other parts. The oil ensures that the parts held by the ball joint make a soft and non-abrasive connection between each other for optimum performance-similar to how the ball joints in our body feels smooth.

Cleaning

Cleaning always does wonders when it comes to maintaining and taking care of car parts. There aren't any special chemicals and procedures necessary. Just raise the car, get a dry rag and wipe any dirt and excess oil on the body of the ball joint.
